Tantalus Estate sits in the Onetangi Valley on Waiheke Island, where the restaurant looks out over vines, landscaped gardens and wetlands the estate has replanted with thousands of native plants. The main dining room is a broad, bright space built from natural materials, while a private dining room adds tiled walls painted by hand and chandeliers fashioned from old vines. The name recalls the lockable decanter sets of the nineteenth century, made to keep precious spirits safely out of reach, which suits a property that produces both wine and beer. Beneath the restaurant are the Alibi brewery and its Brewer’s Lounge, which is also home to the cellar door.
Executive chef Axel Curtet-Latreille cooks with French foundations and a distinctly New Zealand outlook, taking his lead from the seasons, the estate and small artisan producers around Aotearoa, and putting organically grown, ethically sourced produce first. The à la carte menu might open with oysters shucked to order, served with a Cachette mignonette or cold smoked with za’atar, sesame and citrus, or a duck liver parfait with pear, mustard and gingerbread. Bread is ordered in its own right, rosemary sourdough focaccia and pain viennois arriving with honey butter fermented on the estate, and a seacuterie board brings a daily selection of seafood with crostini and pickles.
Entrées have included Ora King salmon with celeriac, pineapple and yuzu kosho, a traditional pâté en croûte lifted with plum, tangelo and horopito, and Pearl Pasture veal served as short rib and tongue with carrot and kimchi. Mains have ranged from Leigh fish caught by line, with wild garlic, leeks and mussels, to Greenstone Creek beef eye fillet with bordelaise sauce and Hawke’s Bay lamb rump with pear, parsnip and feijoa kosho. A barbecue smoked tofu dish with Ora’s mushrooms and peanuts gives vegans a main of their own, and vegetarian dishes are marked. Desserts such as Paris to Waiheke bring together chocolate, hazelnut and almond.
Two seasonal tasting menus of five and seven courses come with snacks and bread, and the longer Island Journey has moved through courses named Nature, Sea, Land, Tide and Pasture before finishing with chocolate and a glass of Alibi Choco Stout. Estate wines anchor the pairings, including chardonnays, a syrah viognier, a rosé and reserve red blends named Écluse and Évoque. Cocktails use spirits and liqueurs made in Aotearoa, mixing Waiheke gin, whisky and coffee, while mocktails include a spiced pineapple soda. The brewery’s tasting paddle runs from a low carb lager and a Bohemian pilsner to a raspberry Berliner weisse and a hazy pale ale named after the ruru living in the wetlands.

Beer – Alibi Brewing Co.

Smash Palace Low-Carb Lager (4.7%)
Just like the 1981 Kiwi film classic “Smash Palace”, this beer gives number 8 wire kiwi ingenuity critical acclaim. Simple, yet classic – this No frills Ultra Low Carb lager keeps you glued to your screen.
Bohemian Pilsner (5.2%)
A Bohemian style Pilsner made using imported Bohemian Pilsner malt, European bottom-fermenting yeast and traditional Saaz hops. This beer is brilliant and bright with a golden straw hue and thick mousse-like head. Bold and bracey rich malt with an intense floral bouquet.
It's Raspberry Berliner Weis (Sour) (3.5%)
When the resident DJ and DM complains there hasn’t been a sour made in ages, you tell them, “if they get on the tools and make it with you then you will make one together”. This is a modern take on an old German classic. Brewed with a 50:50 base of wheat malt and barley and the kettle soured over two days. Then secondary fermented with a free-flowed spin of Raspberries. Contains lactose.
Ruru Hazy Pale Ale (5.3%)
Ruru our resident wetlands owl got stuck in the berries of the Parapara Tree and after visiting some diners in the daytime got rescued and cleaned up. In the early morning of this brew day he could be heard calling from trees – back to health, Morepork, Morepork. This beer has the flavour of sticky sweet Thai mangoes, bitter orange skin oil, pineapple fruju and the resiny cedar stick it’s served on.
Fata Morgana Hazy IPA (6.5%)
On certain mornings, the horizon bends and the sea conspires to trick the eye. An Island hovers, a ship drifts twice, the world flickers between what is and what might be. A Fata Morgana they call it, a horizon stretched thin, shapes floating where they shouldn’t be. This Hazy IPA brings that illusion to life, bright with stone fruit and citrus, smooth as a calm sea, and just hazy enough to blur the edges. Elusive, refreshing, and gone too soon.
