Lone Star Dunedin is a large, energetic George Street branch designed to handle many versions of an evening out. It opens from late afternoon every day, serving family dinners, catch-ups and organised groups from the same central venue. The brand's familiar Western styling keeps the mood relaxed, but this branch has more range than a single dining room. Tables for a regular meal sit alongside bars, outdoor areas and bookable rooms, so a couple arriving for dinner and a sizeable celebration can each find a space suited to the occasion.

Sharing dishes introduce the menu's bold, generous register. Garlic loaf, soy-and-honey chicken nibbles, salt-and-pepper calamari, chilli-garlic prawns, loaded nachos and New Zealand green-lipped mussels cover bread, crunch, spice and seafood. The best-known centrepiece is pork ribs: they are blanched with honey and spices, finished over fire and covered in hoisin, orange and sesame sauce. Several portion sizes let the same preparation work as a starter, an individual main or a two-person order, which makes it easy to build around the appetite of the table.

There is plenty beyond the ribs. Sirloin and ribeye come with chips, coleslaw and a choice of sauce; chicken may be Cajun-spiced, served in garlic-and-wine cream or stuffed with mushroom, spinach, cheese and tomato. Slow-roasted pork belly, battered market fish and burgers broaden the familiar comfort-food side, while roasted vegetables can replace meat in selected dishes. Children have a dedicated menu rather than reduced adult portions. Pavlova, crème brûlée, banoffee pie and the Kahlúa-and-Moro cheesecake give dessert the same unrestrained spirit as the savoury courses.

The Dunedin premises becomes particularly distinctive when a group moves upstairs or outside. Its Saloon Room has a vintage-style bar and a balcony overlooking the front courtyard, and it can open into the adjacent Lounge for a larger layout. The Lounge adds leather banquettes, a boutique bar and a deck that catches the afternoon sun. Downstairs, the Garden Bar supplies an outdoor courtyard for private meals, meetings, quiz nights and milestone occasions. Those separate environments make the branch unusually flexible, from an intimate family dinner to an event occupying several connected areas.
