Mirch Masala Queenstown brings regional Indian cooking to a central Shotover Street dining room, pairing a lively street-food sensibility with the comfort of a full restaurant and bar. The kitchen draws on local produce while importing the spices that define its sauces and marinades, giving New Zealand ingredients a distinctly Indian frame. Reservations, takeaway and delivery make the venue flexible, but the wine, cocktails and table service give dine-in visits their own relaxed rhythm.
The opening dishes are built to share and reveal the menu's breadth quickly. Samosa chaat combines a crushed filled pastry with yoghurt, mint and tamarind, while papri chaat brings crisp wafers under the same sweet, tangy contrast. Onion bhajis, potato and paneer tikki, and Chicken 65 offer several fried and spiced options; coconut-poached prawns add a gentler combination of coconut cream, peppers and mint yoghurt. Pav Bhaji, the Mumbai street-food favourite, is one of the restaurant's signature introductions to the meal.
Main courses move between house creations and recognisable regional styles. Paneer or chicken Mirch Masala is cooked with pepper, onion and tomato in a thick masala sauce, while Lazeez Lamb places Southland lamb in a mild cardamom and cashew sauce. Kashmiri Rogan Josh, Malvani fish curry and peppery chicken show different approaches to heat and spice, and biryani layers saffron rice with mint, coriander and tandoor-grilled meat. Indo-Chinese Chilli Chicken provides another route through the menu beyond curry and rice.
Vegetarian dishes, charcoal-grilled choices, breads, accompaniments and desserts allow a table to assemble either a quick meal or a generous shared spread. The bar's local and international wines and cocktails are designed to sit alongside the spice rather than turn the restaurant into a drinks-first venue. Diners with allergies or dietary requirements should speak with the team when ordering, as the kitchen handles a broad range of ingredients and cannot guarantee against cross-contact.
