Fat Puku's Smashed Burgers began in 2020 when founders Vetearii and Gary channelled a shared enthusiasm for hip hop, sneakers and 1980s and 1990s pop culture into a distinctly Auckland burger restaurant. The Queen Street branch opened the following year and remains the original city location. Its cooking method is as important as its styling: fresh balls of seasoned beef are pressed hard onto a hot griddle, creating crisp, caramelised edges while keeping the middle tender. Every patty is formed and cooked to order rather than arriving pre-shaped or frozen.
The burger names turn that retro sensibility into a menu. Big Poppa folds bacon bits into two Angus patties, then adds smoky cheese, house-made ranch, jalapeños and cream cheese. Bernie Mac takes a more classic route with two patties, American cheese, shredded lettuce, pickles, onion and B.Mac sauce. Cindy Crawford uses onion-smashed patties and chipotle mayonnaise, while Macaulay Culkin adds bacon, tomato and the same signature sauce. The humour is memorable, but each name corresponds to a carefully different combination rather than a cosmetic variation.
Meat-free diners are included in the same playful system. Notorious V.E.G builds its burger around an Impossible patty, and several of the beef combinations can be remade with a vegetable patty; gluten-free buns are available as a free swap. Sides are equally distinctive. Super Loaded Skinnies pile chopped onion-smashed beef, cheese, RAD sauce and spring onion over fries, while crisp onion rings, seasoned hash bites and soft-tortilla smash tacos give a group several ways to extend the order beyond the burger itself.
This is a full-service restaurant rather than a takeaway counter with a few stools. Walk-ins are welcome, larger groups can book, and catering is considered for suitable events. The bar programme ranges from beer, wine and cocktails to classic ice-cream milkshakes and boozy variations, while dessert fries turn the house seasoning idea sweet with chocolate sauce, whipped cream and ice cream. That broader experience lets the Queen Street venue carry its music-and-pop-culture identity through an entire evening instead of ending when the burger is finished.
