Bento Bowl sits beside St Pierres Sushi at Rotorua's Trade Central, but its purpose is to take the meal beyond sushi. The concept began in 2001 after the St Pierres team explored the broader everyday food they encountered in Japan, and hot street-food-inspired meals have remained its focus. At the Rotorua counter, that means a quick-service format with enough substance for lunch or dinner rather than a cabinet of cold rolls alone.
Katsu chicken is the clearest expression of the kitchen's style. Chicken is hand crumbed in panko, fried and placed over hot rice with teriyaki sauce, house Japanese mayonnaise, coleslaw, yellow pickles and red ginger. Sesame and spring onion sharpen the finish, while the sauce and mayonnaise keep the rice from feeling plain. It is a carefully assembled bowl rather than a loose collection of toppings, balancing crunch, sweetness, acidity and fresh salad around the rice.
The rest of the menu keeps the same practical, customisable structure. Teriyaki chicken, salmon, beef and tofu sit alongside karaage, tempura prawn and vegetable choices, while curry offers a richer sauce-led route. Noodle bowls switch between ramen, udon and soba, with chicken, prawn and vegetable combinations available across the range. That variety makes it possible to change both the main ingredient and the base without abandoning the venue's Japanese comfort-food focus.
A deluxe bento turns the format into a broader tasting meal, arranging hot and cold components in separate sections. Katsu or teriyaki chicken can be joined by salmon sashimi, teriyaki beef, fried prawns, steamed rice, Japanese pickles, salad, seaweed salad and miso soup. Each compartment preserves a distinct temperature and texture within the same order. Sharing boxes, takoyaki, tempura and spring rolls provide smaller alternatives, making Bento Bowl equally workable for one complete tray or several snacks divided at the table.
