Apéro Food & Wine is a compact Karangahape Road restaurant shaped by the partnership of Mo and Leslie. Their aim is disarmingly simple: a comfortable room where honest food, interesting wine and generous hospitality carry equal weight. Seating ranges from low tables to high bar leaners, which helps the small venue shift between dinner for two, a glass and a snack after work, and larger gatherings arranged directly with the restaurant. The mood is personal rather than ceremonious.
Leslie brings the food traditions of Toulouse to local ingredients, cooking with a directness that lets produce and careful sourcing show. Bread and butter, warm olives, charcuterie and goat's cheese croquettes make an easy opening spread. Mushrooms with garlic and herbs, roasted Savoy cabbage, pomme dauphine and green salad give vegetables meaningful space, while pork sausage with pickles and mustard delivers the robust, unfussy pleasure associated with a neighbourhood French table.
The menu can expand into a full dinner through market fish, a large T-bone served with potatoes and salad, and a specials board that changes each week. Dessert is not an afterthought: soufflé, chocolate mousse, petits fours, madeleines and sorbet offer several different endings, from warm and theatrical to small and restrained. This flexibility is central to Apéro's appeal, since guests can build anything from two plates at the bar to a leisurely sequence shared across the table.
Mo's cellar completes the restaurant's identity. He works directly with New Zealand winemakers and with importers, seeking small producers and limited parcels rather than keeping the list static. The result is a selection that changes often and invites conversation about what is newly open or particularly suited to the food. That living relationship between kitchen and cellar makes Apéro as convincing for diners led by wine as it is for those who begin with Leslie's cooking.
