Caffé Centrale presents Italian dining as a slow, sociable evening rather than a quick refuelling stop. The Alma Street restaurant is Italian owned and operated, with owner and head chef Marco Scarpa leading a team that cooks with local ingredients through an explicitly Italian lens. Dinner reservations are available, including set-menu planning for larger groups, and the restaurant is both licensed and BYO for wine. Takeaway and delivery offer convenience, but the central idea remains a table shared over several courses, conversation and food prepared with enough care to reward an unhurried pace.
The meal can begin simply with tomato-and-basil bruschetta or caprese built from buffalo mozzarella, tomato, olives and basil. Green-shell mussels in spicy garlic and tomato sauce add a more robust seafood start, while a folded piadina combines pesto, mozzarella and mortadella. Pasta then becomes the strongest expression of the kitchen. Roman-style carbonara uses guanciale, egg and pecorino; spaghetti al cartoccio bakes mixed seafood in foil; and another spaghetti combines clams and prawns with garlic, white wine and chilli. Hand-rolled gnocchi, fettuccine, cannelloni, ravioli and lasagne provide further textures.
The main courses broaden the menu without leaving its Italian structure. Eggplant parmigiana layers aubergine with tomato, mozzarella and Parmesan for a composed vegetarian dish. Beef short ribs are braised slowly in red wine and herbs, while rolled pork belly is roasted with rosemary and garlic. A creamy seafood soup gathers prawns, mussels and shellfish with bread, and the duo di mare pairs seared tuna and pistachio with a tiger-prawn skewer and fresh salad. Polenta chips, rosemary potatoes and salad can be added to make the table more generous without overwhelming the sauces and pasta already in play.
Dessert follows well-known Italian forms. Tiramisu layers coffee liqueur, mascarpone and cocoa; panna cotta comes with berry sauce; and affogato drops vanilla gelato into hot espresso with a chosen liqueur. Chocolate dessert and fruit sorbet provide alternatives at either end of the richness scale. That closing selection makes sense of Caffé Centrale's preference for a long meal: antipasto and pasta do not have to carry the whole evening, and the later courses can unfold at their own pace. For groups, set menus simplify the ordering while preserving the experience of eating together rather than rushing individual plates.
