Lava Glass Café turns a meal on the road north of Taupō into part of an art-focused day out. The cafe shares its rural complex with a glass gallery, a working studio and a sculpture garden, so breakfast or lunch can sit before or after watching glassblowers and exploring the grounds. Daily daytime opening, fair-trade coffee and an on-site cabinet make it useful even for visitors who do not plan the full attraction experience.
Breakfast balances generous standards with a few distinctive details. The Lava big breakfast combines bacon, sausages, eggs, mushrooms, sumac-roasted tomato, potatoes and sourdough, while Benedict comes with either bacon or smoked salmon. Brioche French toast takes a sweet route through banana, maple and vanilla meringue. Its savoury counterpart layers grilled halloumi, spinach, dukkah, hot honey and pepper relish, and creamy mushrooms on sourdough can be prepared in a vegan version.
Lunch keeps the flavours bright and practical. An open sirloin sandwich brings roasted peppers, rocket, aioli and chimichurri, while an Asian-style bowl combines avocado, edamame, beetroot, cabbage, sushi rice and a yuzu, ginger and tamari dressing. A kumara and black-bean burger gives the vegetarian side genuine substance, and marinated chicken, bacon, onion jam and pickles fill the alternative burger. The shared platter gathers cured meats, smoked salmon, cheeses, dips and breads for two.
Local and seasonal produce shapes both the blackboard menu and the cabinet of cakes and slices, with some ingredients drawn from Lava Glass's own garden and orchard. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices are woven through the offer rather than added as an afterthought, and composting and recycling connect the kitchen with the wider studio's environmental work. The result is a cafe whose wholesome food, rural calm and vivid glass surroundings feel inseparable from one another.
