Poco Tapas & Wine occupies a bright upstairs room in Rotorua’s O’Sullivan Clemens Building, giving the restaurant a little distance from the street below. The kitchen is organised around seasonal sharing plates, so dinner can be as brief as a drink and a few snacks or unfold into a meal assembled across the menu. That format suits couples as readily as a group, while the compact setting and evening service keep the experience intimate. Cocktails and wine are part of the restaurant’s identity rather than an afterthought.
The vegetable-led plates show how much character can be built before meat or seafood enters the order. Homemade yoghurt flatbread can be paired with roast carrot dip, while fried halloumi, chermoula potatoes and grilled broccolini bring contrasting salt, spice and char. A mushroom dish layered with merguez, beans and artichoke puree pushes into richer territory. These are not token sides: they give a table a substantial base and make it easy to construct a varied meal around produce, sauces and warm bread.
From there, the menu moves confidently between the coast and the grill. Smoked kahawai croquettes, garlic prawns and kingfish crudo cover crisp, buttery and fresh expressions of seafood. Fried chicken is seasoned with Berber spice and served with saffron lime aioli, while wild pork meatballs arrive with Dijon, anchovy and caperberries. Venison tataki with blueberry ponzu and slow-cooked harissa lamb over hummus add two distinct red-meat directions, making the menu feel broad without abandoning its share-plate logic.
Diners who prefer the kitchen to set the pace can choose the chef’s share menu, a sensible route through a selection that changes with the season. Dessert continues the same concise approach, with choices such as crème brûlée and chocolate espresso torte, and cheese offers a savoury finish. The wine list ranges widely enough to support several courses, while cocktails provide a lively alternative at the beginning or end of the evening. Poco works best as a relaxed progression of small dishes rather than a conventional starter-and-main sequence.
