Portobello Hotel & Bistro is a community pub with roots stretching back to 1874, when Nicholas Coneys opened Coneys's Family Hotel on the Otago Peninsula. The present operation still describes itself as a family hotel, welcoming locals, families and visitors to a building that has long served as a village meeting place. Large windows look toward the bay and harbour, keeping the peninsula setting visible from inside.
The kitchen's identity is grounded in simple New Zealand pub meals. A current dinner menu includes locally caught blue cod in beer batter, green-lipped mussels cooked with Thai red curry and coconut cream, lamb rack and ribeye with mash, seasonal vegetables and jus. Salads and burgers round out the selection, giving diners a choice between seafood from close to home, a substantial grill plate and lighter fare.
Vegetarian and vegan diners have several composed options rather than only side dishes. Falafel salad and a falafel burger sit alongside Impossible and black bean burgers, and dairy-free cheese can be requested for pizza. The hotel also maintains a classic takeaway range for locals and peninsula visitors, with phone ordering available for food to collect before heading to one of the area's outdoor spots.
The bar reinforces the hotel's local character. Eight taps move from Dunedin names such as Emerson's and Speight's to other craft beers, with a guest tap and limited bottled releases for something less familiar. There are alcohol-free choices, local wine and a collection of more than one hundred rums, so the drinks list has depth whether the visit is built around dinner, a quiet refreshment or time at the bar with regulars.
