Thai Villa Restaurant brings a quietly presented Thai dining room to central Whanganui, where owners Steve and May Poka have shaped the venue around both seated meals and food to take away. Head chef Tui draws on experience cooking Thai and fusion food in Thailand and Singapore, while the kitchen makes a point of working with locally sourced vegetables and meat. The result is a restaurant suited to an unhurried dinner, with delivery and takeaway extending the same menu beyond the room.

The opening courses cover more ground than a token plate of spring rolls. Money bags enclose pork and peanut, curry puffs bring kumara, potato and onion together, and chicken satay adds a grilled option with peanut sauce. Prawn fingers, spare ribs, wontons and salt-and-pepper squid offer further contrasts for a shared start. Soup can take the next step, with lemongrass-led tom yum, coconut-rich tom kha and wonton soup available in several combinations of chicken, prawns, seafood or vegetables.

Curries and stir-fries form the menu's main framework. Green, red, yellow, massaman and panaeng curries provide different balances of chilli, coconut and spice, with lamb shank massaman giving the familiar curry a particularly substantial centrepiece. The wok selection ranges from basil, ginger and garlic-and-pepper dishes to cashew, chilli-paste and choo chee preparations. Diners can select a preferred protein for many of these, making the menu easy to navigate without reducing every dish to the same sauce.

Seafood and hot-plate dishes show the kitchen at its most expansive. Hidden Treasures gathers prawns, scallops, calamari and mussels in red curry and coconut, while Seafood Island and whole-fish choices suit a table that wants to share. Weeping Tiger places grilled scotch fillet with vegetables and cashews, and honey roast duck brings another rich option. Pad Thai, drunken noodles, fried rice, Thai salads and set banquets round out a menu that can move from a simple noodle dinner to a multi-course gathering.
