The District is a Te Rapa cafe, bar and eatery that has spent a decade adapting to its Hamilton neighbourhood. Under owner Ghassan Shiqarat, its current direction brings Middle Eastern seasoning and Mexican accents into an all-day cafe format. The result is broad without feeling anonymous: breakfast standards sit beside spice-led dishes, and the restaurant can shift from a quick coffee stop to a complete lunch.
Morning choices show that balance clearly. Eggs Benedict arrives on potato rosti with spinach and hollandaise, while shakshouka sets eggs in a Middle Eastern tomato and capsicum sauce with yoghurt and pita. Corn fritters, house granola and sweet crêpes provide lighter alternatives. The District Breakfast is the more substantial route, combining sausage, mushrooms, spinach, rosti, beef bacon, eggs and toast.
The later menu keeps familiar cafe forms but gives them a distinct set of flavours. Southern fried chicken waffles pair beef bacon, barbecue sauce and maple syrup, and Buffalo chicken sliders come with ranch dressing and fries. There is also a harissa chicken salad with feta, orange and tzatziki, alongside fish and chips, steak sandwich, fettuccine Alfredo and a crisp chicken burger. The kitchen cures and smokes its own beef bacon, and identifies its beef, lamb and chicken dishes as halal.
Dine-in, pickup and delivery make the food accessible in several ways, while a function room gives business meetings or private groups their own space. The District also designs workplace catering around a customer's budget and can supply lunch or brunch away from the cafe. Those services suit its practical Te Rapa setting and reinforce the venue's identity as more than a breakfast-only stop.
