Flame Grill & Bar brings the spirit of a South African braai to the first floor of Steamer Wharf in central Queenstown. Its cooking revolves around intense heat, specialised grills and the kind of communal appetite associated with food cooked over fire. The open energy of the service suits both lunch and dinner, from a quick burger to a table sharing ribs, steak and sides, with the wharf location placing the meal in the middle of the resort town's waterfront district.

Ribs and beef are the menu's anchors. The pork ribs are basted in Flame's own sauce and charred on the grill, while the steaks begin with highly marbled beef aged for at least 55 days. Rib eye, sirloin and eye fillet can be paired with mushroom, peppercorn or blue cheese sauce, red wine jus, chimichurri or the restaurant's spicy peri peri paste, letting the grill flavour lead while still giving diners control over the finish.

The South African influence continues through sizzling Mozambique prawns, house made boerewors and rotisserie peri peri chicken. Lamb and chicken skewers, a mixed grill and seafood choices such as Big Glory Bay salmon widen the selection, and the kitchen also offers salads, a chargrilled cauliflower steak and a mushroom based vegetarian burger. That range makes it possible for a mixed table to share Flame's style without every diner ordering the same cut of meat.

Flame's theatrical streak carries through to dessert. The Flaming Bombe Alaska layers house made raspberry, mango and passionfruit gelato beneath Italian meringue before it is finished at the table with flaming Cointreau, while lemon curd tart offers a more restrained alternative. Local wines and house cocktails round out the bar side of the restaurant, and sharing menus for larger groups turn the signature prawns, ribs, steak and sides into a progressive feast.
