Emerson's Brewery & Taproom turns a long Dunedin brewing story into a place where the beer and the meal share the same address. Richard Emerson made his first tiny kitchen brew in 1991, and the purpose-built Anzac Avenue brewery and taproom opened in 2016 after decades of growth. That history gives the venue more substance than a branded bar: visitors are eating at the working home of a local brewery, with table bookings and tours drawing them further into how the beer is made.
The food begins with plates suited to passing around the table. Fried oyster-mushroom wings come with ranch and buffalo sauce, tsukune chicken skewers carry tonkatsu and furikake, and sticky pork ribs are finished with garlic-roasted peanuts. Poutine, goat's-cheese croquettes and truffled polenta chips handle the richer pub cravings, while popcorn prawns, chilli-salt squid and a rotating cheese plate create easy matches for a tasting flight or a round from the taps.
Full plates are more ambitious than standard taproom fare. Smoked beef brisket arrives with pork-belly and fennel croquettes, red-cabbage purée, Carolina mustard and pink pickle, while monkfish is paired with prawn bisque, capers, potato and fennel. Pork ramen, braised pork belly and pumpkin-ricotta gnocchi take the menu in different directions. The clearest link back to the brewery is the snapper in Emerson's Pilsner batter, served in the familiar fish-and-chips format with tartare and cabbage pickle.
Twenty taps make beer choice central to the visit, but the venue gives non-specialists several ways to approach it. A guided tasting focuses on six important beers and the brewing process, while the walk-through tour opens another route into the brewery's work. The beer garden is dog friendly, and the mixture of shared snacks, full meals and bookable experiences lets a visit stretch from a casual lunch to an afternoon built around tasting and touring.
