Crisp fried bites with slaw and dipping sauce at Speight’s Ale House Dunedin

Speight's Ale House Dunedin has occupied its Rattray Street home since 1999, giving it a long association with the city behind the beer whose name it carries. Lunch, dinner, snacks and drinks are served every day. Bookable restaurant tables suit a planned meal, while the sports-focused bar keeps some seating available on a first-come basis. The result is a pub that can handle a full dinner and a match-day drink without reducing either side of the business to an afterthought.

The opening dishes lean into the generous spirit expected of an ale house. A locally baked loaf provides a straightforward start, while seafood chowder brings a more substantial option. Sharing platters take different directions through cheese, meat or seafood, allowing a group to set the tone of its meal. The Ferrymans platter is the most expansive expression of that approach, combining pork ribs, battered blue cod, chicken, sausage and fries with sauces for a broad survey of the kitchen on one plate.

Southern ingredients and beer-friendly comfort food shape the main courses. Speight's porter sausages come with mash, and brewer's braised beef carries the brewery connection into a slow-cooked dish. Rattray Street pork ribs, beer-battered blue cod, lamb shanks and Otago lamb continue the hearty theme. Ribeye and Taieri venison give the grill a regional emphasis, while a vegan vegetable rosti stack ensures plant-based diners have a composed main rather than being limited to side dishes.

Beer remains central to the experience. Gold Medal Ale, Dry Hopped Pilsner, Hazy Pale Ale, Old Dark and Summit Ultra cover a range of Speight's styles, with guest beer adding rotation and tasting trays making comparison easy. Desserts are available for diners extending the meal beyond a main course. The menu also identifies gluten-free and dairy-free adaptations, a useful practical detail in a venue built around shared tables, broad pub classics and groups whose dietary needs may vary.

Brewer’s Notes – Beers

Speight’s tasting notes. See staff for details of the current Emerson’s guest tap and current limited release.

Speight’s Gold Medal Ale

Draught Amber Ale. First Brewed 1876. Alcohol Level 4.0. Colour 21. Bitterness 14. Speight’s is an ale with a hint of “grassy” undertones that add to its complexity. It has the full flavour of Speight’s malt and hops.

Speight’s Summit Ultra

Low carb lager. First Brewed 2017. Alcohol Level 4.2. Our brewers put their heads together to create a full flavoured lager, with 75% less carbs. And they did just that. Summit Ultra balances crisp refreshment with great taste, so you can enjoy a full flavoured beer without all the carbs.

Speight’s Cloudy Apple Cider

Cloudy Apple Cider. First Brewed 2022. Alcohol Level 4.7. Colour 8. Bitterness 22. Crisp apples from the Hawke’s Bay provide both the clouds & the silver lining in this refreshing cider. This is a classically cloudy traditional style cider, smooth upfront with a fresh, slightly tangy finish. It is also described as being so crisp that you could take a bite out of it.

Speight’s Old Dark

English Porter. First Brewed 1991. Alcohol Level 4.0. Colour 90. Bitterness 23.5. This dark ale has roasted malt character with a hint of chocolate. The flavour has been balanced with extra hops and rounded out with just enough sweetness.

Speight’s Hazy Pale Ale

Hazy Pale Ale. First Brewed 2023. Alcohol Level 4.5. Colour 9. Bitterness 22. A hop forward hazy beer with a lighter malt profile to really let the hops shine. Brewed with a healthy dose of Citra and Galaxy hops to produce a juicy, citrus hop hit.

Guinness

Stout. Alcohol Level 4.2. Rich and creamy. Distinctively black. Velvety in its finish. This iconic beer is defined by harmony. Sip after sip, sweet counters bitter as the malt arrives on cue to complement a base of roasted barley. Just as the unmistakable white head sits flush atop the dark beer, so do the flavours counter and combine perfectly.

Speight’s Dry Hop Pilsner

Pilsner. First Brewed 2025. Alcohol Level 4.5. Colour 15. Bitterness 30. Brewed in the style of a European Pilsner then dry hopped with Citra hops, giving the Pilsner a lovely tropical edge.

Speight’s Tasting Tray
