Parcels Restaurant occupies a fitting corner of Dunedin's former Chief Post Office, a substantial 1937 building now home to Distinction Dunedin Hotel. The postal theme is more than a name: original vault spaces have been retained as private dining rooms, adding a sense of occasion to group meals. For everyday visits, the main restaurant remains open to the public and places historic architecture around a modern hotel dining room.
The restaurant covers most of the day rather than concentrating on one sitting. A daily breakfast buffet is joined by an à la carte morning selection, lunch runs into the afternoon, and high tea gives the space a slower social rhythm before dinner begins. That breadth makes Parcels useful for hotel guests, local catch-ups and celebrations, with advance bookings available across the dining formats.
Lunch starts with dishes that move easily between a small plate and the beginning of a longer meal. Local blue cod bites and calamari sit beside duck liver parfait and harissa eggs, while the salad selection can bring together halloumi and honeyed nuts, pork belly with fennel, or Thai-seasoned beef. Burgers and fettuccine peperonata provide more substantial alternatives without turning the midday menu into a shortened copy of dinner.
Dinner shifts towards composed main courses with a clear New Zealand thread. Fresh fish, beef fillet, ribeye and Central Otago lamb are joined by chermoula chicken and porcini arancini, so meat-free diners have a considered main rather than only side dishes. Lemon posset, chocolate delice, sorbets and Otago cheese carry the meal through dessert, while the playful Safety Deposit Box sweet nods back to the building's earlier life.
