Prohibition Smokehouse has evolved considerably since it began serving southern-style barbecue in 2016. Its 2019 reinvention placed dry-ageing lockers at the centre of the kitchen, using controlled time as deliberately as fire and smoke to deepen the character of carefully selected cuts. Regional produce completes the approach, keeping the restaurant connected to Otago even when its techniques look toward American smokehouse traditions. The result is more refined steakhouse than rustic barbecue joint, with the original love of meat carried into a composed dinner experience.

The room on The Octagon follows the same idea of reinvention. Roaring-twenties references appear through rich, dramatic details, but the finish is contemporary rather than a strict period set. That polish makes the restaurant suitable for a special dinner while preserving enough warmth for a less formal steak and cocktail. Its central position adds energy outside the windows, and the evening-only schedule helps the space hold a distinct after-dark mood. Service, lighting and presentation all support the sense that the meal is intended to unfold rather than be rushed.

Dry-aged steak remains the clearest expression of the kitchen, with rib-eye and larger feature cuts showing what the ageing and grill work can do. The menu reaches beyond beef, however: recent dinners have included beef tartare, blue cod sliders and duck, accompanied by beetroot salad, broccolini or mash. Those choices bring acidity, freshness and vegetable texture around the richer centre of the plate. Desserts provide a final composed course, so a visit can move from a small starter through steak and sides to something sweet without relying on smoke in every dish.

Drinks are treated as part of the restaurant’s identity rather than an afterthought. Cocktails suit the theatrical setting, New Zealand wines can be matched to the grill, and Prohibition’s status as an Ardbeg embassy gives smoky Islay whisky a natural home. Dinner service runs from Tuesday through Saturday, concentrating the experience into five evenings each week. For diners choosing between Dunedin’s casual bars and its formal rooms, Prohibition occupies an appealing middle ground: technically focused cooking and thoughtful drinks delivered in a vivid Octagon setting.
