Hennessy's Irish Bar brings the scale and sociability of an Irish pub to central Rotorua while keeping full meals at the centre of the visit. Rebuilt in 2016, the Tutanekai Street venue uses spacious booths, tucked-away tables and a separate function room to handle everyone from individual diners to families, tour parties and work gatherings. Live sport and the bar create energy, but the extensive all-day menu gives guests ample reason to come specifically for lunch or dinner.
Starters move from simple garlic bread and soup of the day to house-made seafood chowder and a classic shrimp cocktail. Wedges, fries and nachos cover casual sharing, with the nachos available in beef-and-bean or vegetarian versions. Burgers and sandwiches then offer several distinct directions: steak with onion jam, tempura fish with tartare, chicken with bacon, pulled pork in Cuban sauce, lamb with mint jelly, a house beef patty or a vegetable patty with beetroot and tomato relish.
Traditional pub plates provide the menu's heart. Fish and chips use New Zealand dory, while Scotch fillet comes with mash and peas or salad and fries. Beef braised in Guinness fills one pie; lamb and vegetables sit beneath mash in another. Lamb shanks, bangers and mash, an all-day Ulster fry-up, lasagne and chicken or vegetarian fettuccine add further comfort, while several substantial salads use salmon, shrimp, lamb or Cajun chicken for a lighter main course.
Children have their own meals, and desserts are made in house, including bread-and-butter pudding with fruit and Bailey's cheesecake alongside sundaes, chocolate cake and waffles. Guinness naturally has a strong place at the bar, supported by other tap and craft beers, cider, wine and low- or no-alcohol options. A two-course Sunday roast completes the pub's traditional side, giving Hennessy's a clear rhythm of everyday meals, group occasions and familiar weekly rituals.
