Canyon Brewing occupies a dramatic bend of the Shotover River in Arthurs Point, where its terrace and beer garden look across the water towards Skippers Canyon. The original microbrewery remains behind the taproom bar, rooting the restaurant in the place where four Queenstown locals began the business in 2020. It is an easy setting for a long lunch after a morning outdoors, yet the large indoor fireplace gives the room just as much purpose in winter. Daily service from 11am makes the venue accessible without turning its distinctive riverside character into a special-occasion formality.
The kitchen treats the menu as something for the table to explore together. Sourdough flatbread with garlic butter can be expanded with hummus or muhammara, while wood-fired edamame, butternut squash in Thai red curry and Brussels sprouts with agrodolce raisins give vegetables real presence. Fried chicken is glazed with Sichuan caramel, calamari meets vodka sauce and chilli crisp, and prawn toast is paired with kimchi mayonnaise. Skewers take three separate directions through chipotle mushrooms, peri peri chicken or lamb kofta, so sharing need not mean ordering several versions of the same idea.
Wood-fired sourdough pizza is the restaurant's other strong anchor. A margherita and pepperoni with hot honey cover familiar territory, but miso mushroom with nori, pork sausage with spinach saag, and pulled lamb with pomegranate molasses and toum push the range well beyond standard taproom toppings. Diners wanting a plate of their own can turn to a smash burger, char siu pork ribs with celeriac remoulade, or chicken parmigiana with buffalo mozzarella and vodka sauce. These larger dishes retain the kitchen's playful combinations while offering the substance expected after a day around Queenstown.
Beer is inseparable from the experience, with taps drawing on Canyon's locally made core and seasonal releases while small batches continue to be brewed on site. The brewery's larger Cardrona operation has expanded production, but the Arthurs Point taproom still provides the direct connection between the brewing story, the glass and the river outside. Cocktails on tap, cider and local wine give non-beer drinkers useful alternatives, and the kitchen offers vegan and vegetarian dishes plus gluten-free adaptations. Dogs are welcome inside and in the garden, events can be booked, and step-free access broadens the occasions the venue can comfortably handle.
