Duke of Wellington is a weekday gastropub with a particularly useful place in the rhythm of the capital. It stands on Waterloo Quay directly opposite the railway station and bus terminal, turning a windy part of Pipitea into a warm stop before work, after a commute or around an evening train. The room is pitched as stylish but welcoming rather than ceremonial, and the combination of substantial food, coffee and a full drinks programme lets it serve more purposes than a bar that only comes alive at night.
Beer is treated as a moving selection rather than a fixed backdrop. The pub works with local suppliers and gives Wellington breweries a strong presence on its changing taps, while still reaching across New Zealand for pale ales, lagers, cider, stout and more adventurous styles. The live list changes at short notice, encouraging regulars to check what has just arrived instead of ordering from habit. Wine and spirits broaden the bar, but the emphasis on rotating regional beer gives the Duke its most distinctive drinks identity.
A recurring weekday programme gives the food its own rhythm. Monday matches a pie of the week with a pint, Tuesday turns to a changing burger, and alternate Wednesdays combine the quiz calendar with beer and nibbles. Friday closes the working week with fish and chips. Because the featured fillings and flavours can change, these are not rigid signature dishes so much as dependable formats, giving nearby workers and commuters a reason to return while allowing the kitchen to introduce something different each week.
The social side extends beyond those specials. Fortnightly quiz nights encourage teams to settle in, tables can be booked for a planned meal, and the full food menu is also available for takeaway when the train timetable wins. Child-friendly service widens the audience earlier in the day. Altogether, Duke of Wellington behaves like a genuine city gastropub: food is substantial enough to lead the visit, the drinks reward attention, and the location makes an unhurried stop remarkably easy even on a busy weekday.

Because we use Untapped to prepare our list some of the descriptions of the International beers might be a bit inaccurate. The local beers have their information supplied by the breweries and should be correct.
2.TinyKen
Non-Alcoholic – IPA, 0% ABV, Double Vision Brewing, Wellington, Wellington Region. Plain and simply put, if you want a beer but are being ‘good’ for whatever reason, you don’t want to be drinking some rubbish hop-water. Meet TinyKen. TinyKen is as innocent as the Milkman saying hi to mum; meet your real daddy of Non Alc Hazy IPAs. Flavours: American Ale, wheat and oats collaborate with Lallemand LoNa yeast to give more body and keep it like a proper beer. Whirlpool Hops balance the malt sweetness with a touch of bitter for that traditional IPA like balance. Big amounts of dry hopping with Mosaic and Freestyle Hop’s Hop Kieff smash in flavour and aromas.
4.Crisp Apple 0%
Non-Alcoholic – Cider, 0% ABV, Zeffer, Hastings, Hawke’s Bay
5.Pocket IPA

6.UNDIES MiNi IPA
IPA – American, 2.5% ABV, Rocky Knob, Mount Maunganui, Bay of Plenty. Big on Hops small on Booze. Its a big beer hiding in those undies. Togs Togs Togs Undies Undies Undies!
