Elixir Cafe has been part of New Plymouth's cafe scene since 2006, and its Devon Street East branch brings together early starts, all day breakfast and a broad lunch menu. The cafe is licensed and welcomes BYO wine, while the kitchen's emphasis on local, sustainable and free range ingredients where possible gives a clear direction to an otherwise wide ranging offering. House baking and coffee remain central to the everyday experience rather than afterthoughts beside the savoury food.

Breakfast can be as compact or as substantial as the occasion demands. The full Elixir breakfast layers bacon, kransky, eggs, hash browns and toast with mushrooms, tomato and house smoked baked beans, while eggs Benedict provides a more focused plate. Other options move through a jumbo pancake, smashed avocado, salmon potato cakes and a breakfast stack, making the morning menu useful for both a quick cafe stop and a long weekend brunch.

Lunch has its own strong identity. The cafe's mince on toast uses local Green Meadows beef, and the double beef and bacon cheeseburger leans into the same hearty side of the menu. A southern fried chicken chive waffle crosses sweet and savoury territory, while a chicken and bacon sandwich offers a more familiar cafe lunch. Diners wanting something lighter can turn to salads, including a version topped with hot honey fried chicken.

The drinks and cabinet offering complete the picture. Ozone coffee anchors the espresso menu, with smoothies and juices available alongside it, and fresh muffins, cakes and biscuits bring a baked option to morning tea or dessert. Elixir also offers catering, but the Devon Street cafe works just as naturally for breakfast, lunch or coffee, with enough variety to accommodate groups whose appetites run from a single sweet to a full cooked meal.
