Tartan Rose Cakery and Deli combines a New Plymouth café with a serious cake and catering business. Food is made from scratch with fresh seasonal produce, while the display and order book extend into carefully hand-iced layer, tiered and custom cakes. That dual identity matters: the Devon Street East venue is not simply a cake counter, but a place for a full breakfast or lunch as well as something sweet to take away.
The sweeter side of breakfast is imaginative without losing its comfort. Creamy oats come with poached pear, stewed rhubarb and a brown-sugar nut crumble, and toasted bagels can be kept simple with peanut butter, house-made jam and banana. Brioche French toast goes much further, filled with banana and butterscotch before being finished with caramelised banana, biscuit crumb, strawberry mascarpone and hot-chocolate maple syrup.
Savoury dishes show the same willingness to layer flavours and textures. Smashed pumpkin on sourdough is paired with fried halloumi, roasted carrots, pistachio dukkah, candied pepitas and herb-tahini dressing. A Mexican masala Benedict combines three-bean masala with eggs and smoky paprika hollandaise, while guacamole eggs bring avocado, feta, tomato and beetroot hummus together. Mushroom-and-provolone toastie, eggs Benedict with potato gratin, and the bacon-and-sausage Tartan Breakfast offer more familiar alternatives.
Beyond the café, the catering list moves easily between sweet and savoury occasions. Mini cakes, scones, lemon tarts and whole loaves can be paired with finger sandwiches, sliders, sausage rolls, frittata or quiche, while breakfast orders can add croissants, fruit, granola pots and seasonal vegetable platters. Made-to-order cakes range from compact double layers to tiered and custom designs, giving Tartan Rose a practical role in everything from an office morning tea to a larger celebration.
