Cafe Istanbul has served Turkish food in Tauranga since Ali and Suna Sengezer established the restaurant in 2014. Its Cherrywood dining room is warmly decorated and includes a private dining area, setting up a relaxed neighbourhood restaurant rather than a quick kebab counter. Lunch and dinner service run from Tuesday through Sunday, with a licensed bar and BYO wine available for diners settling in for a fuller meal.

The Iskender meals show how the kitchen builds a complete plate. Lamb, chicken or a mixture of the two is arranged with rice, hummus, tabouleh, jacik, beetroot dip and salad, giving the grilled meat several fresh and creamy accompaniments. Vegetarian versions replace the meat with choices such as mujver and falafel, while halloumi or spanakopita offer further meat free routes through the same generous format.

Open kebabs take a similar collection of fillings and serve them across flatbread, making the bread part of the meal rather than a wrapper. Pilav Ustu plates put seasoned rice at the centre and add grilled meat or vegetarian alternatives, providing another option for diners who want the flavours of the kebab menu in a plated form. Together, these sections let a table compare grilled, fried and vegetable dishes without every person ordering the same style of meal.

Ordering takes place at the counter, but there is still plenty of scope to turn the visit into a leisurely dinner. Turkish coffee and apple tea make fitting finishes, and Turkish delight adds a small sweet note after the savoury plates. A dedicated children's selection and the private dining space broaden the restaurant's appeal for families and groups, while the combination of mezze style accompaniments and individually composed mains works equally well for a casual lunch.
