The Fat Farmer is a locally owned Hokowhitu restaurant and bar designed around eating together. Vintage accents and rustic details sit within a polished contemporary room, giving the space enough character for a celebration without making an ordinary dinner feel overly formal. Shared plates are dispatched in the kitchen's own sequence, so the table assembles dinner gradually instead of waiting for conventional starter and main-course rounds to arrive in unison.
Its signature centrepiece is a one-kilogram lamb shoulder, slow roasted on the bone and finished with mint dressing, goat cheese, cinnamon pumpkin and jus. Smaller plates establish the menu's range before that arrives. Bruschetta combines tomato, feta and basil, pan-seared goat cheese brings local honey and hazelnuts, and southern fried chicken is matched with gado-gado sauce, nut praline and pickled cauliflower. Roasted cauliflower and burrata with Massaman sauce offer meat-free contrasts.
Other plates move comfortably across different cooking traditions while remaining practical for sharing. Flat-iron steak comes with red-pepper salsa, pomegranate and pine nuts; coconut-crusted gurnard is served as fish fingers with sesame mayonnaise. Diners assemble their own duck pancakes with hoisin, crisp vegetables and ginger-soy braised meat, while honey-roasted chicken thigh gains wild rice, preserved lemon and cumin yoghurt. Together they make a meal that can shift from rich to bright across successive dishes.
Dessert keeps the same interest in texture and contrast. Tiramisu affogato combines espresso, ice cream and sponge, sticky date and pear pudding arrives with crystallised-ginger ice cream, and baked bombe Alaska uses Central Otago plum ice cream beneath glazed meringue. Chocolate custard with espresso-martini gel offers another finish. Wine, New Zealand craft beer, cocktails and alcohol-free mixed drinks support the bar side, while two children's meals provide a straightforward option for younger diners.
