Hungry Ape Asian Cafe & Restaurant Menu

Hungry Ape Asian Cafe & Restaurant brings an unusually wide lunch-and-dinner menu to Water Street in central Whangārei. The dining room handles both services, while reservations, pickup and delivery make the restaurant useful for anything from a quick solo meal to a shared order at home. Its cooking moves comfortably between Chinese favourites and casual cafe formats without forcing either side of the menu into the background.

Small plates and dumplings make an easy starting point. Pork and cabbage dumplings can be ordered pan-fried or boiled, with vegan dumplings providing a parallel choice, while pork wontons arrive in chicken broth. Spicy cucumber salad and kimchi offer crisp, tangy counterpoints, and the snack section also ranges through cauliflower bites, spring rolls, pork buns, prawns and takoyaki.

Noodles and wok dishes form the menu's deeper centre. Spicy curry laksa offers a soup-based option, while scallion oil and chilli sauce dress the dry-tossed noodles. Kung pao chicken, sweet-and-sour pork and shredded pork in garlic sauce sit beside mapo tofu and a vegetable-rich sautéed tofu dish, giving mixed groups several ways to build a table around rice and shared mains.

The cafe side appears most clearly in the portable meals and drinks. Crispy chicken, pork or tofu can be folded into wraps with chips, and rice bowls and bento-style boxes turn the same proteins into complete single-plate lunches. A brioche burger, coffee, thickshakes and fruit smoothies round out the selection, including blends built around mango, avocado, berries, banana, dates or chia seeds.
