Moons occupies a distinctive place in Dunedin's Exchange: it is a restaurant, a live-music room and the production home of DogStar Brew Lab. The brewery moved into the Princes Street venue in 2023, and its small-batch beers are sold exclusively over the Moons bar. That close relationship gives the room the easy rhythm of a brew bar without reducing the kitchen to an afterthought. Afternoon opening rolls into evening service, making Moons equally suited to a plate and a pint, a full dinner, or food before the music begins.
The menu starts in a convivial register, with dishes that make sense in the middle of a table. Crumbed gherkins arrive with mustard-salt mayonnaise, pulled-pork croquettes with parsley crème fraîche, and house-made breads with hummus and dips. Pizzette add a more substantial sharing option. The lamb kofta version brings halloumi and tzatziki to a spiced tomato base, while salami is matched with romesco, capers, olives and anchovy. A cauliflower-cheese topping and a smoked-salmon combination broaden the choice beyond cured meat, with gluten-free bases available for those who need them.
Larger plates lean into generous, familiar food while retaining a few thoughtful details. The Moons burger combines New Zealand beef, locally cured bacon, pickled onion and a house barbecue sauce on a milk bun. Beef bourguignon is served with mash and glazed carrots, and crumbed market fish comes with rosti-style fries, salad and ranch. A roasted butternut, chickpea and tomato cassoulet provides a fully plant-based main rather than a token side, while the Big Business Salad builds texture from smoked olives, creamed feta, artichokes, pickled beetroot and pepitas.
Dessert continues the kitchen's comfort-food approach in a more polished form. Chocolate cremino pairs hazelnut custard with ice cream, Italian meringue and almond biscotti; rhubarb and apple brûlée brings a crisp sugar lid; and warm gingerbread arrives with spiced pear, hokey pokey ice cream and pecan. The onsite beer programme gives those final choices an unusual counterpart, whether the table stays with a DogStar pour or shifts from beer to something sweet. Together with the live programme, it makes Moons a place where dinner can stretch naturally into the rest of the night.
