Salt Bar & Restaurant changes character across the day at its St Clair address, operating as a cafe in daylight hours and a bar and restaurant by evening. Diners can book ahead, sit outdoors when the weather cooperates or settle near the fire when Dunedin turns cold. That daily rhythm makes the venue useful for breakfast, a casual plate, dinner or drinks without forcing every visit into the same mould.
The daytime menu ranges from light starts to substantial brunch. Granola with berries and yoghurt sits alongside mushrooms on toast with white bean herb spread, while croissant French toast takes a richer route. Eggs can be kept simple or ordered Benedict style on a rosti, and the bacon buttie gives the breakfast list an uncomplicated handheld choice.
Later meals move comfortably between snackable plates and full mains. Karaage chicken, salt and pepper squid, meze and bao suit a shared first round, while Moroccan chicken comes with tabouli, hummus and feta cream.
