Chillingworth Road brings several distinct spaces together at its Papanui premises: a contemporary bar, a more secluded dining room and a kitchen store. That layered layout lets the venue reveal itself gradually, moving from a drink at the front into a fine-dining experience beyond. The contrast also gives diners a choice of tone, whether they want a polished multi-course occasion or a less extended meal that still carries the kitchen's careful, technically focused style.
The Trust the Chef degustation is the restaurant's most immersive format. Rather than choosing isolated dishes, guests follow a multi-course sequence designed by the kitchen, with an optional series of curated wine tastings alongside it. The cellar draws on both New Zealand and international labels, allowing each pour to support the food's changing flavours over the course of the meal. It is a format for diners who enjoy pacing, surprise and close attention to pairings.
The bistro offers a more concise way to experience the same kitchen. Current signature dishes include confit duck and beef fillet aged for 14 days, two preparations that rely on time and precision but land in recognisable, satisfying forms. This shorter format is useful when a full degustation feels too involved, while retaining the sense that technique and ingredient treatment matter. It also makes the restaurant approachable for a polished dinner that does not occupy an entire evening.
For private dining, the refurbished Billecart-Salmon room accommodates intimate groups of up to 18. Hosts can choose either the bistro style or the full degustation, keeping the event aligned with the amount of ceremony they want. Wine remains central, but beer, cider and after-dinner spirits broaden the drinks options across the meal. The room is therefore suited to celebrations and small gatherings where privacy, structured food and attentive drink service all carry equal weight.
