Chopstix Restaurant & Bar has served central New Plymouth since 2022, concentrating on Northern Chinese cooking and handmade dumplings. The Devon Street West dining room is notably spacious, with seating for about 120, yet its city-centre position also makes it convenient for a weekday lunch. An extensive drinks selection and room for large tables give the restaurant a broader role than a quick dumpling stop, particularly when friends, families or work groups want to share several dishes.
Dumplings provide one of the clearest starting points. The kitchen serves pan-fried dumplings for crisp edges and a soft filling, while wontons in chilli oil bring heat and a more slippery texture. Daily lunchtime yum cha opens another way into the menu before the larger rice and noodle dishes arrive. Noodle soup, fried noodles and fried rice offer complete individual meals, with combination versions suited to diners who want a mix of ingredients rather than a single featured protein.
The main dishes range widely across poultry, pork, beef, seafood and tofu. Peking duck and slow-braised pork belly reward a longer meal, while orange beef, Mongolian beef and Sichuan chilli chicken bring distinct sweet, savoury and spicy directions. Prawn dry pot, prawns with cashews and salt-and-pepper prawn cutlets show the seafood section at work. Hot-and-spicy tofu ensures that the table can add a meat-free dish without abandoning the menu's bolder flavours.
Chopstix is well set up for communal dining. Share-style set menus can be tailored for a group, and a private room at the rear has its own bar and space for larger celebrations or corporate occasions. For smaller visits, lunch yum cha and the current ordering menu make the experience more casual. Across those formats, the consistent thread is variety: handmade bites, wok-cooked classics, substantial centrepieces and drinks designed to keep a shared meal moving.
