Jizo has been serving Japanese food in central Dunedin since 1997, giving the Princes Street restaurant a long place in the city's dining scene. Its own description stresses a relaxed, open and friendly style rather than ceremony, and the room is intended to work for both a quiet dinner and a larger celebration. Weekday lunch and evening service make it useful for different occasions, while the broad menu allows a table to stay with sushi or build a meal across raw, grilled, fried and noodle dishes.
Sushi and sashimi occupy a large part of the menu. Salmon and tuna appear as sashimi, nigiri and aburi, while mixed platters combine fish with rolls and other pieces for sharing. Classic rolls cover vegetable, prawn, salmon, tuna, karaage chicken and teriyaki chicken fillings. More elaborate choices add combinations such as salmon with mango and cream cheese, a dragon roll centred on prawn or tempura chicken with sriracha mayonnaise. Sushi balls offer another route through chicken, tofu, salmon, tuna and shrimp.
The hot kitchen is just as extensive. Small plates move from miso soup and edamame to gyoza, takoyaki, karaage chicken and tempura prawns or vegetables. Bento boxes organise several tastes into one meal, while donburi, udon and ramen provide heartier formats. Diners can choose teriyaki salmon, yakiniku beef, chicken or pork katsu, Japanese curry and mixed seafood, among other combinations. Because rice, noodles, soup and fried dishes all have distinct sections, repeat visits need not follow the same pattern.
Plant-based diners receive more than a token substitution. Jizo maintains a dedicated vegan menu with tofu sushi balls, vegetable rolls, vegan nigiri, curries, bento, salads, poke and noodle soups. A separate keto selection replaces conventional sushi rice with cauliflower rice and includes both fish and vegetable rolls. Gluten-free availability is marked across many sections, though diners with allergies should still discuss preparation. To finish, Japanese mochi filled with ice cream comes in flavours such as green tea, mango, chocolate and strawberry.
