Little Amigos brings a colourful Mexican restaurant-and-bar format to Weld Street in Redwoodtown. The room is set up for proper table service, with reservations available and separate lunch and dinner sessions later in the week. Takeaway is useful, but the dine-in experience has its own appeal: sizzling plates, food passed around the table and a list of flavoured margaritas all reward staying put. The kitchen describes its approach as fresh and home cooked, a theme reflected in the house salsas, corn chips, guacamole and slowly cooked fillings used across the menu.
Snacks are more considered than a routine bowl of chips. Jalapeño-and-cheese popper bites arrive with salsa and sour cream, while guacamole and pico de gallo are paired with house corn chips. Ceviche tostadas combine fish and prawns with lime, peppers, cucumber and pickled jalapeño, and queso fundido folds house-made chorizo into a warm cheese dip. These dishes suit a round of drinks, but they also make an energetic first course, alternating crisp shells, bright citrus, chilli and melted cheese before the heavier plates arrive.
Tacos provide the clearest tour of the kitchen's fillings. Carnitas pork is slow cooked and lightly crisped; beef is cooked in a chipotle marinade; buttermilk chicken is fried with Mexican spices; and prawns are finished with habanero sour cream. Each can also lead into a larger format, with quesadillas and burritos available in meat, seafood or vegetable versions. Sizzling fajitas bring onions and three colours of capsicum to a cast-iron plate with tortillas, guacamole, sour cream and cheese, while beef enchiladas arrive with rice and refried beans.
The restaurant keeps families and groups in mind without making the menu feel generic. A children's section offers small quesadillas, while nachos and Mexican fries are easy additions for a crowded table. Dessert keeps the fried-tortilla theme going: sopapilla is dusted with cinnamon sugar, a whole banana can be wrapped as a giant chimichanga, and apple pie filling receives the same crisp treatment. Churros with chocolate and caramel provide a simpler finish. Paired with a margarita, these sweets give a lively meal a suitably playful final course.
