LOCAL Cafe & Eatery builds its Palmerston North identity around food sourced from provincial New Zealand and prepared fresh for the day. The cafe names partners for coffee, dairy, meat, cheese, bread, wine and pantry ingredients, turning the word local into more than a sign above the door. Compostable packaging, recycling, food rescue and reuse of coffee grounds add a practical environmental strand to that producer-led approach.

Breakfast can be ordered as a composed dish or assembled from individual choices. Eggs Benedict comes with options including mushrooms, ham, bacon, salmon or pork belly, while smashed avocado is layered over a potato-and-herb hash with feta, basil and a fried egg. A big breakfast and bacon-filled breakfast burger suit larger appetites; sweet crepes and a fruit bowl with oats, coconut and yoghurt take the morning in a lighter direction.

From mid-morning, the lunch menu shifts through bowls, burgers and bao. A salad bowl can be topped with anything from mushrooms or cauliflower to chicken, lamb, pork belly, fish or salmon. The Mexican rice bowl combines black beans, avocado, mango salsa and lime crema with lamb meatballs or halloumi, while the crispy chicken burger adds camembert and mint yoghurt. Bao buns offer chicken, crumbed fish or fried cauliflower in the same order.

Smaller plates make the cafe useful beyond a full breakfast or lunch. Fried chicken, calamari, bruschetta and cheesy garlic flatbread can be shared, and the drinks list moves from espresso coffee to Wellington herbal tea blends. LOCAL also handles meetings, corporate functions and celebrations, with savoury catering, sweet trays, hot platters and event menus available. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free markers help guests begin a dietary conversation with the team.
