Mornington Kitchen & Bar is the dining heart of Mornington Taphouse, occupying the Mailer Street venue long known locally as Mornington Tavern. A comprehensive renovation gave the restaurant its current name and a warmer, all-day identity. It is distinct from the Taphouse's sports bar and large function room, focusing instead on family meals, coffee, after-work drinks and table dining. Several seating zones, a fireplace and views from the lower tables let guests choose between a casual catch-up and a more settled meal.
Breakfast has enough personality to be a destination in its own right. Fried chicken waffles combine bacon, mascarpone and chilli-infused maple, while brûlée French toast layers vanilla custard, fruit and Biscoff caramel crumb over brioche. Eggs Benedict and mushrooms on toast cover familiar café ground, and a corn-and-zucchini fritter stack offers a vegetable-led choice. The Mornington breakfast gathers eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, mushrooms and tomato for diners who want the full plate, reinforcing the restaurant's role from the start of the day rather than only at pub hours.
Later service shifts towards food that works with a drink and a shared table. Salt-and-pepper squid, pork belly bites, fried chicken and vegetable dumplings form a broad starter selection, with weekly cocktail creations and a changing cheesecake adding some flexibility around the core menu. The room can therefore host a quick plate after work, a round of snacks for several friends or a full family dinner. Its relaxed pub setting matters here: the food is substantial and varied, but it remains approachable rather than dressed up for ceremony.
The main courses preserve one important piece of the venue's history: beef schnitzel remains a fixture, served with hand-cut chips, salad and a choice of sauce. Speight's beer-battered blue cod gives the menu an Otago pub classic, while burgers, brisket, barbecue pork ribs and ribeye cover different appetites. The current kitchen has refreshed the range while keeping the generous, familiar meals that made the original tavern part of Mornington life. That balance gives the dining room a clear local character without leaving it fixed in the past.
