Mum's Chicken turns a narrow first-floor George Street space into a lively Korean fried-chicken restaurant. Bench seating runs along the room with tables arranged for diners, while a central service counter keeps the casual format moving. The kitchen prepares fresh chicken each day, making this central Dunedin location as suitable for eating in with friends as it is for collecting a meal to take away.
The chicken menu is organised around markedly different finishes rather than minor variations on one sauce. Mum's Original keeps the focus on crisp Korean-style chicken, Yum Yum adds a sticky sweet-chilli coating, and Galbi moves toward a sweet and savoury profile. Prinkle brings cheese and onion flakes with a creamy dip, Supreme uses sweet-and-sour mayonnaise, while Chilli & Mayo and the much hotter Magma serve diners looking for more heat.
Korean street-food dishes give the menu another direction when chicken alone is not enough. Tteokbokki combines rice cakes with a hot, spicy sauce, and the hot-dog section includes both a classic version and one coated with crisp potato pieces. Creamy Onion Chicken and Yu-Rin-Gi reshape the fried-chicken idea as salads, using either a rich onion cream or a sharper sour dressing to create a different balance on the plate.
Sides are designed to break up the richness and make a group order more varied. Cheese balls offer a molten, savoury bite, shoestring chips add familiar crunch, and house-style pickles or coleslaw bring acidity and freshness alongside the chicken. A set of dips, including garlic aioli, ranch, spicy mayonnaise and the restaurant's signature sauces, lets diners tune each piece rather than committing the entire table to one flavour.
