Shining Peak Brewing combines a working New Plymouth brewery with a full eatery at its Gill Street premises. Open seven days, it is designed for diners who want the food to carry as much weight as the beer. House labels range from Fanny Fantham's Lager and Octopus Clamp Dark Lager to Highwayman APA, Skunk Juice Hazy IPA and the lighter Little Fake XPA. The menu frequently suggests a particular brew beside a dish, turning the pairing into a practical part of ordering rather than a separate tasting exercise.
Small plates move confidently between comfort and sharper, more delicate flavours. Fried chicken bites come with honey-miso glaze and lime-coriander yoghurt, while lamb ribs use miso-soy glaze and smoked yoghurt. Parmesan and jalapeño croquettes sit alongside bao filled with sticky pulled pork or fried halloumi. Tuna ceviche with coconut caviar and puffed rice and salmon sashimi with ginger dressing and wasabi snow give seafood a lighter treatment, balanced by beetroot, carrots and salads among the vegetable plates.
Larger dishes keep the choice broad enough for a mixed table. A Green Meadows beef burger represents the familiar pub side of the kitchen, while lamb rump and grilled gurnard salad move toward composed restaurant plates. House fettuccine gives pasta its own place rather than leaving carbohydrates to fries and bread. For diners who prefer to share, market fish, flat-iron steak, pork belly and a charcuterie selection can anchor a meal after several smaller plates.
Dessert returns to the brewery theme. Dark-lager caramel appears with the beer brownie, and beer ice cream brings the brewing programme into another sweet finish. That connection between the taproom and kitchen extends beyond flavour through the 5% Project: each month, five per cent of beer revenue from the venues is directed to a different New Zealand community organisation. A meal here therefore links the brewery's own beer, its food pairings and a continuing local giving programme.
