The Cook carries the social spirit of its building into the present day. The Cook Street venue began life as an Odd Fellows society hall in the late nineteenth century, and its modernised vintage interior still feels made for gathering. Families can settle in for a meal, friends can meet over beer, and the rooms can be arranged for celebrations and fundraisers without losing the relaxed character of a neighbourhood pub.

Casual eating starts with food built for the middle of the table. Fries, wedges and kumara fries can be loaded with bacon, brisket or pulled pork, while sliders come with vegetable fritter, chicken, beef or pork fillings. Chicken tenders, calamari and house-made fritters cover smaller appetites. Three large platters then take different directions through seafood, assorted chicken or a mix of jalapeño bites, spring rolls, onion rings and other fried favourites.

The main menu is broad enough to stop the pub from relying on snacks alone. Pizzas include buttermilk chicken, seafood, a meat-heavy carnivore and margherita, while burgers pair fish, fried chicken, a vegetable fritter or a bacon-wrapped beef patty with criss-cross fries. Mussel fritters, honey-soy salmon, barbecue ribs, fish and chips and a classic steak meal offer substantial alternatives, with salads bringing seasonal vegetables and brighter dressings into the mix.

Children receive a bento-style meal with fruit and vegetable sticks alongside their chosen hot item, and dessert can be as simple as brownie or tiramisu or as communal as chocolate fondue for two. The bar pours a broad Good George range beside other beer, wine, cocktails, coffee and alcohol-free drinks. Weekly quiz nights, pizza occasions and live music keep the historic hall active as a local meeting place rather than merely a backdrop.
