Wabi Sabi is a Japanese restaurant on Broadway Avenue in Palmerston North, open for separate lunch and dinner services from Tuesday through Sunday. The restaurant takes reservations and online orders, but its menu is designed for a seated meal as readily as takeaway. Starters, made-to-order sushi, sashimi, ramen, rice dishes and bento boxes provide several distinct ways to dine rather than reducing the visit to one narrow speciality.

The opening plates cover crisp, fresh and savoury textures. Prawn tempura, takoyaki, pork-and-chive gyoza and chicken karaage sit alongside edamame, seaweed salad and vegetable gyoza. Beef tataki adds a lightly seared option with ponzu, spring onion and garlic, while cheese katsu brings panko-crumbed pork and mozzarella. These dishes can start a longer meal or be assembled into a varied shared table.

Sushi rice is seasoned in house with gluten-free vinegar, sugar and salt before being used across nigiri, maki and rolls. Salmon, tuna and scallop appear as simple nigiri or sashimi, while blowtorched salmon, tempura prawn, crabmeat, avocado and teriyaki chicken create richer combinations. Vegan avocado and vegetable maki sit beside seafood-focused rolls, so the sushi section accommodates both clean raw-fish flavours and sauced, crisp or plant-based choices.

Hot dishes move through regional ramen styles and composed rice meals. Miso ramen follows a Sapporo-style broth, shoyu ramen uses a lighter Tokyo-style soy base, and tonkotsu brings the richness associated with Fukuoka pork broth. Teriyaki chicken, tofu or salmon sets, Japanese curry, katsudon, eel rice and several bento combinations extend the choice, including a fully vegetarian bento of tempura, sushi and gyoza.
