Gothenburg has been part of Hamilton's restaurant scene since 2009 and has occupied its Grantham Street riverside home since 2014. The family-owned restaurant sits on the lower floor of the ANZ Centre, tucked away from the central-city traffic beside the Waikato River. Floor-to-ceiling windows, an airy dining room and an outdoor terrace make the water and riverbank part of the setting. It works equally well for a relaxed afternoon drink, a table of shared plates or a more polished occasion.
Sharing is the organising idea of the menu: plates arrive as the kitchen completes them, so the table builds its meal in stages. Vegetable tapas travel widely in flavour, from burrata with aromatic tahini, chilli crisp and toasted cashews to beetroot and feta arancini, sriracha-glazed pumpkin and mushroom wontons with miso butter. Chickpea korma, polenta chips and potato gnocchi give plant-focused diners substantial choices rather than afterthoughts, reflecting a kitchen that is comfortable drawing inspiration from several culinary traditions.
Seafood and meat plates offer the same range. Ora King salmon is paired with ponzu, nori mayonnaise and crisp salmon skin, while the Swedish-inspired Skagen röra combines prawns, dill and lemon on grilled ciabatta. Prawn and scallop tortellini comes with crayfish bisque, and market fish is seared in butter. Beef tataki, pork skewers, sticky twice-cooked lamb ribs and beef-and-mushroom croustades fill out the richer side of the table before local and European cheeses or desserts such as pistachio parfait and dark chocolate tahini mousse.
The full tapas menu is offered for lunch and dinner, with a lighter selection through the afternoon and the bar operating across the day. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free choices are identified, and a separate allergen guide helps diners navigate the menu. Groups can move upstairs to a private glass-walled room, use the terrace or book the full venue, with set tapas menus and canapes adapting the restaurant's sharing style to celebrations, meetings and larger events.
