Fat Eddie’s combines a full food and drinks operation with the identity of a Christchurch live-music institution. The original venue spent years in SOL Square before the 2011 earthquakes damaged it beyond repair. Its return came in 2017 at The Terrace, where the first-floor rooms and balcony overlook the Avon River in the central nightlife precinct. The revived venue keeps jazz at its core but also makes room for funk, vocal acts and other local performers across a seven-night programme.
The kitchen follows that lively setting with American and Southern-style comfort food built for informal eating. Fried chicken appears in burgers and as a boneless plate, while chicken wings, ribs and tortillas broaden the savoury options. Dirty fries arrive loaded with cheese and bacon, jalapeño poppers provide a compact share plate, and the burger range extends from beef and spiced chicken to battered cauliflower. It is a menu designed to stand up to a late evening rather than function as a token bar snack list.
Pizza and platters make group ordering especially natural. American-style, pepperoni and smoked-brisket pizzas cover familiar and richer flavours, while larger boards can combine sliders, rib dogs and corn dogs for the table. Cold beer and specialty cocktails run alongside the food, with classics such as cosmopolitans, espresso martinis and mojitos still represented. A dance floor, lounge seating and the wraparound balcony let diners shift between a meal, a drink and the band without leaving the venue.
Fat Eddie’s also scales readily from a casual catch-up to a large celebration. The Lounge keeps groups close to the stage, the adjoining balcony adds outdoor space, and the Hereford Street balcony can be reserved for a more contained gathering. Whole-venue bookings bring the bar, full-size stage and riverside outlook together for standing events, while smaller groups can use the same food, music and drinks mix without taking over the room.
