ROCA occupies the first floor of The Terrace with a view across the Ōtākaro/Avon River. Its cooking starts with New Zealand produce from local growers, then looks outward across the Mediterranean from Spain to the Middle East. Fire and smoke provide the connecting technique, giving the restaurant a clear identity without narrowing it to one national cuisine. The upstairs setting, shareable menu and midday-to-late service make it equally suited to a long lunch, cocktails with plates, or a full evening meal.
Small dishes reveal how widely that Mediterranean lens is applied. Fresh and fried oysters sit near anchovy toast with tomato and pecorino, warm olives, and house sourdough flatbread seasoned with zaatar. Buffalo burrata comes with fennel jam and local olive oil, while market fish crudo uses saffron vinaigrette and burnt mandarin. Chargrilled octopus is grounded by black-garlic eggplant purée and chermoula, and goat's-cheese croquettes combine burnt honey, almonds and rosemary in a compact sweet-savoury plate.
The larger plates are concise but layered. Organic chicken is glazed with pomegranate and harissa; Lumina lamb loin is paired with tomato chutney, sour cherry and black-cardamom sauce; smoked aged beef rib comes with zhoug and jus. Smoked Akaroa salmon adds a seafood option. Vegetables are treated as composed dishes rather than afterthoughts, including fire-grilled mushrooms with black lime and smoked provolone, orange-glazed carrots with truffle salsa verde, crisp potato latkes with garlic toum, and salads built around herbs, grains, fruit and nuts.
Dessert continues the cross-Mediterranean conversation. An olive-oil ice-cream sandwich uses halva, pistachio and honey, while chocolate cremeux brings peanut praline and raspberry; almond cake and a pavlova with coconut yoghurt and coffee granita complete the selection. The bar offers three styles of sangria and cocktails named for Mediterranean places, backed by a wine list that moves among New Zealand, Spain, France, Italy and other regions. Diners who prefer not to choose can hand the sequence to the kitchen through the trust-the-chef option.
