Brew Union Brewing Co. has grown into a large inner-city brewery, bar and restaurant since opening in 2017. Its footprint spans Broadway Avenue and the King Street frontage, giving the operation room to place brewing and dining under one roof. Exposed brick, original trusses and reclaimed timber retain the industrial character of the buildings rather than hiding it. That scale and material warmth suit a venue designed for everything from a beer at the bar to catered gatherings and full group meals.
The 1,200-litre brewhouse supplies the bar with beer that is served fresh, unfiltered and unpasteurised. More than 21 taps create room for the house range and visiting independents: golden ale, lager, pale ale, hazy IPA, West Coast IPA and stout cover a wide spectrum before the rotating guest beers enter the picture. Specialty gin widens the drinks selection for people who are not there primarily for hops, while the working brewery keeps the venue's identity rooted in production rather than branding alone.
Wood-fired pizza is the natural companion to those taps. Cold-fermented, hand-stretched dough carries familiar Margherita and pepperoni toppings as well as Reuben, Cajun chicken, mushroom, Buffalo chicken and chorizo combinations. The sharing plates are built for the same social style of eating. Dirty fries, calamari, fried chicken, cauliflower, pickles and edamame let a table assemble its own spread, while the larger brewers board brings several flavours together when choosing dish by dish feels too restrained.
The kitchen also reaches well beyond pizza and bar snacks. Cola-braised beef cheek, pork belly, stuffed chicken roulade and lamb rump offer substantial plated choices for a more conventional dinner. Mango cheesecake and dark chocolate tart provide rich finishes, while berry sorbet and a sundae pull dessert in lighter or more nostalgic directions. Group dining and catering are supported alongside the everyday service, and the venue's attention to sustainable local sourcing gives its large-scale operation a useful connection to producers closer to Palmerston North.
