Smoked salmon with garden salad at Birdwoods Havelock North

Birdwoods Havelock North is as much a countryside outing as it is a cafe visit. Set on Middle Road a short drive from the village, the property brings together a garden cafe, an art gallery, an outdoor sculpture garden and an old-fashioned sweet shop. The gallery occupies an 1894 church hall that was moved from Waipawa and later extended with a conservatory, giving the destination a strong sense of place before food arrives. Rural grounds and the terrace make it easy to turn lunch into a longer wander rather than a quick stop.

The cafe serves brunch and lunch through the middle of the day, followed by afternoon tea, and its fully licensed drinks service allows a meal to extend beyond coffee. An organic kitchen garden is central to the food identity, providing much of the salad produce as well as citrus, herbs and edible flowers. That direct connection to the grounds suits the setting: the garden is not only scenery outside the dining room, but also a working source of colour and freshness for what appears on the table.

High tea gives Birdwoods a more ceremonial way to dine. Served in the conservatory, it brings together sweet and savoury pieces for celebrations, family occasions or a leisurely afternoon, with advance arrangements available for larger groups and dietary needs. The cafe also caters for group bookings and is known for making celebration cakes, so special occasions can be built around the venue rather than simply accommodated within it. This flexibility makes the property useful for everything from a relaxed lunch to a planned milestone gathering.

There is plenty to explore before or after eating. The gallery mixes New Zealand and African art and craft, while large works continue outside through the sculpture garden. The neighbouring sweet shop fills a one-room colonial cottage with old-fashioned confectionery, and summer brings real-fruit ice cream. Three resident ostriches add another unexpected feature to the grounds. Together, those elements make Birdwoods unusually rewarding for mixed-age groups: the meal anchors the visit, but the art, gardens and sweet shop give everyone a reason to linger.
