Nero Restaurant turns a 1918 Palmerston North character house into a dining room with a strong sense of place. The building sits within established landscaped grounds, giving guests a choice between warm interior rooms and outdoor tables among the garden and deck when the weather allows. Chef-owner Scott Kennedy and co-owner Yvette Kennedy shape the hospitality, while the kitchen's modern New Zealand outlook draws on European technique and selected Asian flavours. Daily shopping and relationships with local markets, growers and food suppliers keep produce at the centre of that approach.
Entrées are composed with the detail expected from that setting. Duck pâté is matched with beetroot, plum and toasted ciabatta, while prosciutto-wrapped brie combines a crisp exterior with sundried tomato and red capsicum. A three-cheese soufflé sits beside truffled cauliflower and hazelnut, and bruschetta layers confit capsicum with buffalo mozzarella and salsa verde. Prawn and scallop ravioli, finished with caviar and a shellfish sauce, gives seafood a more classical treatment. These plates establish a menu that is polished but still built around recognisable ingredients.
The main courses widen the range without losing that focus. Pork belly comes with a pork-and-prune bonbon, apple and crackling, and lamb rump pairs pistachio with warmly spiced cabbage. AngusPure beef fillet is supported by hash-brown chips, pecorino and red-wine jus, while confit duck brings depth from slow cooking. Filo-wrapped chicken with brie, sundried tomato, spinach and bacon is a long-form comfort dish, and pumpkin risotto or miso cauliflower gives vegetable-led diners more than a token side assembled as a main.
Dessert is treated as a full part of the meal, not an afterthought. A white-chocolate brûlée, sticky-date and ginger pudding, chocolate preparations, tiramisu, a playful hokey-pokey sundae and a New Zealand cheese option create several different endings. The restaurant's rooms and grounds also make sense for anniversaries, business meals and small celebrations, with adaptable private spaces and set menus available for planned occasions. Whether indoors in winter or outside under the established trees, the service format keeps Nero's refined cooking connected to the character of the house around it.
