The Bowling Club is not a members' sports club but a public Caversham community eatery built around accessible hot meals. Lunch and dinner service combines dine-in, takeaway and community delivery, with borrowed crockery available for guests who stay. Its social-enterprise model allows people to pay the suggested amount, contribute more, or request a free meal, bringing diners of different means into the same everyday room.
There is no fixed restaurant menu to memorise. Dishes change daily with seasonal supply and what the kitchen can turn into a nourishing, affordable meal. Vegetables come through local suppliers, while staples such as lentils and potatoes come from Canterbury growers. Vegetarian food forms the base of the offering, with meat swaps or additions available, an arrangement that keeps plant-based eating central rather than secondary.
A current week shows how varied that system can be. One dinner pairs a vegetarian roast with potatoes, cauliflower cheese and slaw, with chicken or slow-cooked beef alternatives. Another centres on an oversized spring roll; curry night brings pumpkin dhal, samosa, salad and rice. Friday lets diners build wraps, salad bowls or loaded potatoes around falafel, halloumi, chicken, pork, beef or lamb shank and a colourful selection of vegetables and spreads.
Lunch stays deliberately flexible through wraps, salad bowls, soup, loaded potatoes and macaroni and cheese, accompanied by daytime barista coffee. Vegan and gluten-free paths appear daily, and a changing dessert adds a small finish to the meal. House-made muesli, bread, sauerkraut, pickles, jams and relishes extend the kitchen into pantry food, while free-meal support and pay-it-forward contributions keep the cafe's community purpose visible at every service.
