Bushfire Bar & Grill gives Hamilton Central a South African dining room centred on fire, generous cuts and familiar comfort dishes. The Victoria Street restaurant is built for a full evening meal rather than a quick snack, with the grill carrying most of the menu's weight. Smoky bastings, peri peri heat and traditional accompaniments bring a clear sense of place to an otherwise approachable steakhouse format.
The starters introduce that character in several directions. Chicken livers can be ordered in tomato and onion or peri peri sauce with pap or toast, while a biltong beef quesadilla folds a South African pantry staple into a shareable bar dish. Buffalo wings with blue cheese sauce, crumbed mushrooms and salt-and-pepper calamari leave room for a mixed table to start more conventionally.
From the grill, rump steak, lamb chops and hickory-basted pork ribs can stand alone or be combined with chicken, calamari and boerewors. The mixed grill is the broadest sampler, bringing ribs, a chicken quarter, lamb and sausage onto one plate. Lamb bunny chow offers a different kind of comfort: Durban-style curry served in bread, with a pap-and-curry version available for diners who want the maize meal instead.
Burgers widen the choice beyond steaks and ribs, with beef, chicken and vegetarian patties available alongside mushroom, creamy-sauce and buffalo-style variations. Dessert returns to recognisably South African flavours through malva pudding and peppermint crisp tart, while chocolate, butterscotch and banana waffles supply a more playful finish. The result is a menu that can suit a mixed group without losing the restaurant's flame-grilled identity.
