Arden Bar & Kitchen sits behind a heritage Hardy Street shopfront, pairing a contemporary restaurant with a serious wine and cocktail bar. The interior offers several ways to settle in: a place at the long bar, the window seat, a larger dining-room table or the sheltered courtyard. Lunch and dinner reservations are available, but walk-ins are welcome, preserving the relaxed character of a venue whose food and drinks lists change with its producers.
Lunch has its own voice rather than repeating a shortened dinner menu. Smoked fish on toast comes with whiskey-pickled mustard and soft egg, while a tsukune burger uses chicken meatballs, pickles and chilli-crisp mayonnaise. A prosciutto sandwich layers fresh stracciatella, honey and rocket; a leek and cheese toastie takes a vegetarian comfort-food route. Cauliflower and lamb salads, plus a crumbed fried beef-lasagne topper, make the midday selection unusually varied.
Dinner is designed for grazing before moving into larger plates. Depending on the current menu, a table might begin with a natural oyster, mushroom croquette or goat's-cheese gougère, then add smoked snapper rillette, market fish crudo, duck liver parfait or beef tataki. Those compact dishes let diners build a progression of seafood, vegetable and meat flavours, while Arden's chef-selected menus provide a more guided option for groups who prefer the kitchen to shape the sequence.
The bigger dishes keep the produce-led approach intact: baked ricotta gnocchi with pumpkin and goat's cheese, market fish with charred leeks and mustard cream, pork belly with Korean chilli glaze, or lamb shoulder with beetroot and walnut dukkah. Desserts and changing cheeses extend the meal. Small-producer wines, produce-minded cocktails and the adjoining bottle-shop function make drinks part of the restaurant's identity, not simply a supporting list.
