Sal's Authentic New York Pizza – Nelson occupies the Ford's building near the top of Trafalgar Street, a short walk from the Cathedral Steps. Original wooden floors and the brand's brick feature wall give the room a classic pizzeria feel, while booths and large screens suit casual groups. On fine days, outdoor tables create an easy place to stop for a slice and a drink in the centre of Nelson.
The kitchen follows a clearly defined New York pizza formula. Dough is slow risen and made with New York hard spring wheat, then paired with a California tomato sauce and New York mozzarella. The pepperoni and meatballs follow the same specification, so the distinction is carried through the core ingredients rather than resting on the diameter of the pie alone.
Every whole pizza measures 18 inches, but the menu can be approached by the slice, as a half pie combination or as a full pie. The classics are cheese and pepperoni, while Nonna adds tomato, mozzarella, garlic, basil and oregano. Buffalo chicken, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Fire Island build in combinations of chicken, meatball, pepperoni, mushrooms, chilli and herbs, and the Staten Island gives vegan diners a dedicated pie.
Sides are designed for sharing around the pizza. Garlic knots come with tomato sauce, mozzarella sticks arrive ready for dipping, and Buffalo wings can be ordered in different quantities with blue cheese sauce. Pepperoni wheels add a compact pastry snack, while cinnamon sugar zeppole provide a simple finish. That range, together with the large pie format and daily service, makes the Nelson branch as practical for a group meal as for a quick single slice.
