Momiji Japanese Restaurant & Takeaway is a Japanese-owned, fully licensed Whanganui restaurant inside a historic former Bank of New Zealand building. The owner-chef brings more than two decades of cooking experience in Japan and New Zealand, combining traditional dishes with personal variations in a casual setting. Dine-in and online takeaway sit side by side, while the stone-grill service and evening hours give the restaurant an identity beyond a sushi counter.

Sushi and raw seafood form an important part of the menu, but not the whole of it. Salmon-and-avocado rolls place New Zealand king salmon alongside avocado and lettuce, while chicken-tempura rolls offer a cooked alternative. Sashimi provides the cleanest expression of the seafood, and party platters assemble rolls with spring rolls, takoyaki, karaage and edamame. Tempura and gyoza add fried and pan-seared textures around those colder dishes.

The hot-food range works well for complete individual meals. Teriyaki chicken, karaage and chicken katsu appear as rice bowls, while bento boxes gather a main item with several accompaniments. Japanese curry gives crumbed pork or chicken another sauce-led format. Ramen and udon provide noodles, including a spicy chicken ramen in pork-and-fish-based broth, and miso soup can be added when a lighter warm side is enough.

Drinks and the dining-room format help distinguish a seated visit from takeaway. Japanese beer, sake and plum wine sit alongside New Zealand craft beer and wine, giving several ways to match the cooked, raw and grilled sections. The stone grill adds a separate dining direction without displacing the chef’s sushi, sashimi and noodle work. Together, the historic room, experienced Japanese ownership and broad menu make Momiji suited to both a quick bowl and a longer evening meal.
