Rutland Arms Inn combines a public restaurant and bar with eight guest suites in one of central Whanganui's historic corner buildings. The site's hospitality story reaches back to an inn erected in 1859, while the restored interior now frames an English-style dining room with a distinctly New Zealand menu. It works as more than a hotel restaurant: local diners can call in for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and the bar's local, imported and craft beers make it equally suited to a pint, a full meal or an overnight stay.
The winter dinner menu opens with small plates that move well beyond standard pub snacks. Pan-fried prawns pair bacon and toasted focaccia with mild chilli jam, while crisp pork belly bites use coriander, lime and caramel. Salt-and-pepper calamari comes with lime, garlic and roasted-capsicum mayonnaise. Hot-smoked salmon sits on lemon-and-spinach risotto, and chickpea falafel is matched with coconut-mint yoghurt, paprika cream and red onion. Together, those choices give a table several distinct seafood, meat and plant-based ways to begin.
Main courses preserve the inn's English character without limiting the kitchen to tradition. Bangers and mash arrive with mushy peas, shiraz-and-beef jus and caramelised onions, and battered tarakihi can be paired with salad or mushy peas. Elsewhere, New Zealand lamb rump, pork belly, chicken roulade and aged Scotch fillet take more composed routes. Salmon is served over prawn-and-courgette linguine, lamb becomes a slow-braised northern Indian curry, and vegan gnocchi uses eggplant, artichoke, mushroom, olive and tomato ragù. Burgers and a Scotch-fillet sandwich cover a casual appetite.
Different dayparts make the inn useful for several kinds of visit, with dedicated breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert menus gathered in one place. Dietary markers identify vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free possibilities, although the kitchen is clear that it does not have separate allergen-free preparation areas. That practical warning helps diners ask the right questions before ordering. Between the broad meal schedule, the traditional pub dishes, the more composed seafood and meat plates, and the beer selection, Rutland can shift comfortably from morning coffee to an evening gathering.
