The Athens Yacht Club brings family-style Greek dining to a yacht-club-inspired room on Victoria Street, opening every evening from 5pm. Food is presented as part of a broader Mediterranean welcome, encouraging a table to order across several sections rather than treating dinner as a rigid sequence of individual courses. The restaurant occupies the Carlton Butchery building at the corner of Bealey Avenue, with parking behind the building and another allocated area on nearby Dublin Street for guests arriving from elsewhere in Christchurch.
Mezedes supply the most varied way into the menu. Grilled octopus is folded through a salad of baby potatoes, chorizo, olives and capers, while a rich gratin layers potato, celeriac and artichoke beneath halloumi foam. Venison meatballs come with creamy garlic spinach and feta, and roasted eggplant is built up with halloumi, tomato sauce and béchamel. Crispy calamari tentacles with burnt-chilli mayonnaise and grilled black tiger prawns in chipotle butter bring two distinct seafood directions to a shared opening order.
Larger plates balance recognisable Greek comfort food with contemporary accompaniments. Mama's moussaka layers eggplant, pork-and-beef ragù, béchamel and pecorino, whereas roasted chicken is paired with courgette and pea, fregola, baby lettuce, tahini and za'atar. Pork belly arrives with cauliflower skordalia and persimmon relish, and market fish uses artichoke, cannellini beans, capers and kale. For a table intent on sharing, the centrepiece is a slow-cooked 1.2-kilogram lamb shoulder served with labneh; mushroom gnocchi and ribeye broaden the alternatives.
Sides are designed to extend that communal rhythm: Greek roasted potatoes carry lemon-and-garlic mayonnaise, fries are finished with feta and oregano, and vegetables appear with combinations such as dukkha, tahini, ricotta or pomegranate. Dessert stays playful through hot loukoumades, a baklava-meets-tiramisu creation served with espresso ice cream, gelato and affogato. Groups of four or more can leave the decisions to a Greek Feast that moves from dips and flamed cheese through mezedes, chicken, pork belly, salads, potatoes and doughnuts.
